Food AllergyWe have mentioned some of the symptoms of Allergy patients. Next we take a look at the parts of the body involved and what the causes are. Food AllergiesMost of the Allergy problems Healthcare Practitioners and their clients face is from diet. This can be from food or drink. The irritation can be from • a natural part of the food • a chemical that was sprayed on by the farmer • a chemical added by a food processor to extend shelf life So you may be allergic to tomatoes grown without any added chemicals or to a chemical added later. It is hard to distinguish Many of the chemicals used by farmers will be made in a chemical plant they are not a natural part of our environment. They are foreign to our natural food chain and scientists call them xenobiotic, (xeno means foreign the x is pronounced as a z, biotic means life). Farmers growing food Organically do not use these chemicals. They will use fertilisers and sprays but the chemicals are not as harmful. For this reason one of the most useful actions you can take to improve your health is to buy Organic food. Another is to be very careful about buying prepared food. Reading the food label on the packet or tin gets to be a habit for the aware consumer! Again, some prepared or tinned food is organic and would be a better buying decision. There is no perfection here, you just have to do the best you reasonably can!
Inhalation Allergyfood is the obvious way for irritating chemicals to enter the body and start an allergic reaction. But breathing is basic to life and we can inhale dust, fumes or even perfumes which can trigger allergic reactions. We may experience wheezing, headaches or watery eyes from inhalation.
Contact Allergywe’ve looked at eating and breathing so far, sometimes all it takes is contact with the skin to cause a severe allergic reaction. • Stinging Nettles produce sharp pain on contact • Jewellery can cause rashes if it has e.g. Nickel as one of the parts in contact with the skin • Dentists and other healthcare workers can become allergic to the latex in the gloves they have to wear • And of course skin care creams and other beauty products can produce allergic reactions It can ever be the skin cream you buy to treat the allergy that has a chemical in it that causes a greater allergic reaction! Again we have to look at the cause. A rash is telling you that sometnhing needs doing, a problem needs solving. A cream can wipe out the rash but CAN cause other problems inside the body. These are the main types of allergies. All Fruit and vegetables should be washed before cooking and eating but that may not wash the added chemicals away. Most sprays used by a Farmer are absorbed into the leaf and fruit of the plant or tree. They go into the whole system of the plant, otherwise a little rain storm would wash the spray off. Food Allergy ActionThe take home message from all this is not to get "paranoid" about food. Food is not out to get you! We can protect ourselves against a lot of "food allergy" problems by buying unsprayed or organic food when ever we can. After that we we can take sensible doses of vitamin C and bioflavenoids which give us some degree of Natural protection |
